Seven Ways to Create Awareness for your Online Blog

By Emma Champion of Do Your Own PR

It's all very well and good having a blog - we all pretty much know we need one of those - but how do you ensure that people read your blog? What can you do to entice readers and attract the right audience?

Use Social Networking Sites

A fresh post on your blog deserves lots of attention. Promote your posts by placing links to them on your personal Facebook and Twitter pages. Then, think about setting up a specialist page on both Twitter and Facebook for either your business or specifically, your blog, and place the links on there as well. Already, you'll be reaching your entire friends/followers lists, and any number of those people may mention what they read to others. Readers are inquisitive - once they start reading your blog, they will want to know more about you and what you do.

Fresh Content

As you acquire regular readers, keep them happy by making sure you post new content on a regular basis. You will keep your regular readers happy and will be more likely to attract new readers the more you write.

Post Comments on Other People's Blogs

Reading other people's blog sites can provide you with some good insight into how you can improve your own blog, but also, you can place comments on other people's blog posts and include a link to your own site. Try to track down similarly-themed blogs to your own - that way you will be tapping into your desired, target audience.

Blog Promotion Sites and Directories

There are a number of websites online on which you can register your blog. Readers can go to these sites, type in what they want to read about, and the site will provide a list of relative blog sites. Blog Promotion Sites and directories will also provide you with vital statistics which tell you exactly how many people are reading your blog. Some, like BlogTopList.com, have their own scoring system. Others, like ContentPromote.com, help you to distribute your blog content through various other channels, whilst placing a one-way text link at the bottom of each of your articles, and also include a screen shot of your blog site on your posts so people can visually familiarise themselves with you. They also syndicate your blog site on domains where the subject is relevant to your individual posts. Others, like BlogSkinny.com, will, once you register with them, will list a range of topics on their homepage, and readers can select what they want to read about. Thousands of readers check in with these sites every day, and if they happen to be looking for what you've just written about, then you will accumulate many new readers. Whatever you need, there is a site that will help propel your blog to the heights it needs to reach.

These sites are easy to register on - just follow the on-screen instructions, and you can begin to promote your blog within minutes.

Press Release

Write a press release announcing your blog to the world. Treat it the same as the launch of an important product or service by your company. Once you have your blog press release written and ready for presentation, post it on as many sites as possible. Web sites such as Pressbox.co.uk, MediaSyndicate.com and PRWeb.com are perfect examples of places to post and distribute your press release to the masses. Some will ask for a small fee, others will allow you to post your press release for free.

Include Pictures in your Blog Posts

Sometimes the search for a picture in Google Images can rope in unwitting blog readers. Like-minded people may be searching for an image online to accompany their own blog post or article. If that person happens to be in a similar business to you, you may acquire an important contact that may prove useful to you in the future. If the picture you have incorporated into your text is thematic to your blog content, a click on your image will lead web browsers to your blog site.

Guest Blogging

Once you have tracked down blogs which are of a similar theme and nature to your own, contact said-blogger and request the opportunity to guest-blog on their site. You will have a credit on the piece which will make your name known to their list of established readers, and will eventually lead these people to you and your blog once it is in full swing.

These are all things you can actively be doing to make sure people are aware of your presence online. Sitting back and hoping that readers will find you may not be enough. These measures will guarantee results, and could win you valuable business. Utilise every tool at your disposal, embrace your inner-citizen journalist, and take pleasure in the results.
